Head Coach Mike Tomlin
Mike Tomlin was named the 16th head
coach in Steelers history on Jan. 22, 2007.
Hired at the age of 34, Tomlin became only
the team’s third head coach since 1969.
Tomlin became the youngest head coach
in NFL history to both coach in and win a Super Bowl when he led the
Steelers to a 27-23 victory over Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII. He also
became one of only seven coaches in league history to win a Super Bowl
within his first two seasons as an NFL head coach.
Including 2010, Tomlin has compiled a 43-21 regular-season record
and captured three AFC North titles. His .672 winning percentage in
his first four seasons is tied for the best in team history. This year’s squad
finished 12-4, making Tomlin only the second Steelers head coach to
win at least 10 games in three of his first four seasons at the helm.
Pittsburgh ranked first in the NFL in rushing defense ( 62. 8 yards
per game) and second in overall defense (276.8 yards per game). The
Steelers also were first in sacks ( 48) and had a plus- 17 turnover margin.
The Steelers’ 2009 offense became the first unit in team history to
boast a 4,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers, and a 1,000-yard
rusher in the same season. In 2008 — when they won the Super Bowl—
their defense was the league’s best in several categories, including yards
allowed ( 237. 2 yards per game) and points allowed ( 13. 9 per game).
Tomlin’s first Steelers squad, in 2007, finished 10-6. He became just
the second coach in team history to post a winning record, win a division
title, and earn a playoff berth in his inaugural season.
Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, Tomlin spent 2006 as the Vikings’
defensive coordinator. From 2001-05, he was the defensive backs coach
of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was part of the staff that won Super
Bowl XXXVII. Tomlin also has coached in the college ranks, with stops
at Cincinnati, Tennessee-Martin, Arkansas State, Memphis, and VMI.
Tomlin was a three-year starting wide receiver at William and Mary,
graduating in 1994 with a degree in sociology. A first-team All-Yankee
Conference selection as a senior, he finished his career with a school-record 20 touchdown receptions.
Born March 15, 1972, in Hampton, Va., Tomlin and his wife, Kiya,
have two sons, Dino and Mason, and a daughter, Harlyn Quinn.
